Houston is a community of 3,200 people located on Highway 16 in Northwest British Columbia, between Prince George and Prince Rupert, in an area that is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination.

Things to do in Houston

  • Adventure Tours: Local companies can provide various outdoor activities including: hiking, fishing charters, sightseeing, ice fishing and horseback riding.
  • Attractions: Steelhead Park contains many treasures.  It has a beautiful steelhead fountain, the World’s Largest Fly-rod that stands in the centre of the park, and an enormous grizzly bear that weighs almost 1000 pounds that can be seen 24 hours a day at the Visitor Information Centre.
  • Baseball/Softball:  Playing fields are located throughout town. Get a group together for a game.
  • Bird Watching: An abundance of species can be found here.  They vary from sparrows and robins to bald Eagles, Canadian Geese, Stellar’s Jay and even Bluebirds.
  • BMX Track:  Located in Jamie Baxter Park the trails offer a series of obstacles and jumps.
  • Boating, Canoeing & Kayaking:  Enjoy the water of our many lakes & rivers in the area.  Bring your fishing rod and your camera and spend some quite time enjoying the beauty that surrounds us.
  • Bowling:  Our 5 pin bowling alley has 6 lanes. Great way to keep active on the not so sunny days.  Reservations are required.
  • Camping:   Enjoy a stay in well kept private campgrounds or visit one of the many rustic forestry campgrounds found on our lakes and rivers.
  • Circle Tours:  Pack a picnic and make day trips out of scenic road tours that begin and end in our town.
  • Community Events: Stop by the Visitor Information Centre and check our events board.
  • Cross Country Skiing:  Take in the winter scenery while skiing on groomed trails and other nature trails around the area.
  • Curling:  Join a league or enjoy a bonspiel or two!
  • Farmers Market:  Held during the summer months, look for local produce and other items near the Visitor Centre in Steelhead Park.
  • Four Seasons Park:  The home to our rodeo grounds and baseball diamonds.
  • Fishing: Fish our rivers or lakes for species such as trout, salmon & steelhead.  How exciting to catch “the big one”.
  • Geocaching:  Get out your GPS, we have several geocache sites in our area!
  • Golf:  Swing your clubs at one of our 9 hole courses.  Beautiful views enhance the excitement of getting that long sought after hole-in-one!!
  • GT-ing:   A fun, popular winter sport for all.
  • Hiking Trails: An abundance of hiking trails offer breath taking scenery and a chance to enjoy wildlife at its finest.  Many trails take you for a stroll right in and around the town.
  • Ice Skating:  Skate on one of the many frozen lakes or at the ç.
  • Join a Class:  See what catches your fancy at our local Community College or Leisure Facility, or one of the many classes our local clubs offer.
  • Mill Tours:  Learn how a tree changes into a board!!  Take a tour of one of our 2  sawmills.  We have ‘the largest mill under one roof’ in the world here!
  • Mountain Biking: Bike along Houston’s community walking trails, or try some of the trails on the local mountains and take in the beautiful scenery.
  • Photography: With scenery this beautiful, what better way to remember you visit than with your own photo gallery?  Take advantage of all the photo opportunities, mountain ranges, river valleys, wild flowers and wild life!
  • Picnics: We have tons of parks and playgrounds to enjoy! Let the kids have some fun while you relax and visit over a picnic lunch.
  • Playgrounds:  We have many playgrounds throughout Houston. Steelhead & Jamie Baxter parks, school playgrounds and most neighbourhoods have a park of their own. They are a great place for the kids to enjoy and burn off the extra energy kids always seem to have!
  • Public Library:  The public library offers free internet access, fax services, the usual book lending services, as well as a great summer reading program.
  • Restaurants:  Our numerous eateries offer a wide choice of cuisine.
  • Rock Climbing:  Owen Hat – the remains of an ancient volcano, offers great rock climbing.
  • Shopping:  Get everything you need at our local stores to make the most of your adventures in the area.
  • Skateboarding:  Check out the skateboard park beside Jamie Baxter Park.  Another great way to burn off that energy and master a new skill.
  • Snowmobiling:  Dungate Meadows, Telkwa Range & Sibola’s are world class snowmobiling areas.
  • Snowshoeing:  Experience the challenge and pleasure of snowshoeing while in a winter wonderland.
  • Soccer:  Join a league or just gather some friends and enjoy a quick game.
  • Swimming:  Choose a swim in one of our beautiful lakes, or enjoy the pool, lazy river or hot tub at our new leisure facility.
  • Tennis:  Grab you rackets and enjoy the sunshine.
  • Workout:  Keep in shape at one of our gyms, or sign up for one of the many programs offered by various organizations.
