Angler questions progress of quality waters report
March 24, 2010 - By Rikki Schierer - Smithers Interior News

The Quality Waters Strategy report was the focus of a plea by a concerned angler who is asking the Town of Smithers and council to find out how it is progressing.

Non-resident Keith Beverly, who said he spends up to six weeks each year in the valley taking part in the excellent fishing that we have to offer, writes “I would appreciate your use of your channels of communications ... this request is for my benefit and, to a wider extent, for the benefit of the Town of Smithers.”

What he asks is that council help relay their concerns about the Quality Water study, which has been ongoing since 2006 and seeks to find ways to deal with overcrowding on rivers for steelhead.

Council agreed to send a letter to the ministry to find out where in the process the Quality Waters study is.

“There’s huge dollars involved, they stay in our hotels ... some have guides ... so for town council it’s very important that we’re aware of what’s going on,” Smithers Mayor Cress Farrow said.

According to the Ministry of Environment website, the ministry response to the recommendations and the draft angling management plan is still pending, as they are still considering feedback.
